Tribal Transportation

Improving Trails,
Saving Lives

Our department continually works with the local municipal government, and other neighboring governments to maintain grounds, roads, and trails. This includes the ice roads on the Kuskokwim during the winter months.

Tribal Transportation Technicians repair, replace, and install trail markers. One of the problems we face every winter is  the destruction and vandalism of trail markers. Trails are marked for the safety of all travelers. Vandalism costs us time, money, and increased effort. Although it is nothing compared to a loss of life that we are trying to prevent, please discourage vandalism and destruction of trail markers. Thank you for your efforts in helping us save lives.

ONC has always been committed to improving transportation safety and to reduce the risk of death and serious injury that result from incidents on our transportation systems recognizing that Orutsar’aq is the Regional Hub for the outlying 56 tribes.  The Tribal Transportation Program mission is to provide safe and adequate transportation and public road access to and within Tribal lands for all transportation users while contributing to economic development, self-determination, and employment of Native Americans. “Improving Trails, Saving Lives”.
